Clelands Timber Ltd Treated & Primed Boards Painting Recommendations

Clelands Timber Pine Products are produced from 100% Sustainable Renewable Plantation Grown Timber.

Dual Coat Primed BoardsClelands Dual Coat is a 2 Coat Oil Based Machine Primed product. These boards have the advantage of being both Primed and Undercoated on all 4 faces  - this  provides additional durability and protection during the Construction Stage .  Machine painting is significantly cheaper than manual painting.  Contact us for more information.

One Coat Oil Based Primer

CTL Primer is a fully Architectural Designed Oil Based Primer designed as an adhesion coat for the next coat of paint.  This primer will only slow water uptake, not waterproof the timber.

Timber is a natural product and will react to climatic changes – particularly varying moisture levels.  Timber will absorb moisture and expand when exposed to direct contact with water and high humidity, and will contract in dry windy conditions.

Store boards in a dry well ventilated area.

Do not install in wet conditions.  Prior to installation we recommend that an oil based undercoat is applied to give additional durability to the boards and added protection from climatic changes during the Construction and Painting process.

Timber is dried to a moisture level between 8 – 15% before machining to profile specifications.  These boards must be kept dry before installation.  If a moisture meter is not available to check levels before installation, check the dimensions of the profile.  If the dimensions are larger than the specification leave the boards to dry and regain correct profile specifications before installation.

Ensure that all dirt, dust etc is removed before the undercoat is applied.

Seal all end cuts, nail holes and exposed timber during construction process to avoid moisture uptake.  Sand back before the next coat of Paint.

If the boards get wet after installation and before the undercoat they must not be painted until they dry back to their original specification.  If painting goes ahead whilst the boards are wet the moisture is being sealed into the boards which will lead to raised grain around the fingerjoints and inevitable peeling and cracking in the top coats of Paint.

Cupping will occur in dry conditions where the weatherboards are not painted and sealed.

If the manufactures primer is exposed to the elements for some time the surface can become chalky, if this happens the boards will need sanding back and priming again with an oil based wood primer.

Resin may bleed from timber in hot condition or where painted in dark colours.
We do not recommend top coat colours less the 45% light reflectance values.

Please read the below Coating Specification.  If followed correctly, will ensure a 10 year guarantee:
